.: Feng Shui
Feng Shui, literally translated from Mandarin, means ‘wind and water’. Increasingly recognised and embraced by the West, Feng Shui is the ancient study of how the flow of nature’s energy within and around our environment has an influence over how we live and our experiences for harmony, prosperity and the well being of people co-existing in that space.
On a physcial level an understanding of Feng Shui will help us strategically place hard and soft furnishings in and around a space and use specific shapes, colours and materials to optimise positive energy and balance inauspicious energy – having the effect of making the space ‘feel good’ and support us. On an energetic level understanding the movement of energy over time can help us use our space smartly to harness different types of energy for different activity thus improving sleep, relationships, opportunities for pregnancy, career advancements, academic results and promotion of prosperity.
Like many eastern disciplines, Feng Shui has branched into various schools of application.
The main three are:
Flying Star School – the traditional and authentic Chinese Feng Shui practice. It is considered the most accurate technique to apply in Feng Shui because it takes into account the influence of energy flowing in a building over time. Conducting an analysis is complex and considers the building’s age as well as the energy changes over the course of the current year and years to come.
Form School – relates to the physical environment, analysing everything that can be seen and how certain contours and shapes can influence the wellbeing of people within this environment. The external environment of a building, such as mountain landforms and water courses, can be studied. Internally, placement and size of furniture and soft furnishings will have an effect on the occupants of the building.
Eight Mansions School – uses the ‘Bagua’ and is comprised of eight ‘trigram’ sectors. Each sector is static and is assigned a particular compass direction and a certain type of energy. This school has become popular in the West, however, traditional Chinese Feng Shui Masters prefer to use Flying Star school.
