‘Ki’ – energy or life essence is intrinsic in Japanese culture highlighting that there is more to us than just our mind and body. In Japan, this word is used in common language for example ‘Gen-ki’ to mean wellness or health; ‘Ki-mochi to mean one’s feelings and Ki-ai – a word used in martial arts to mean fighting spirit. Ki is pivotal to martial arts like Ai-ki-do and Tai Chi. By incorporating Ki in every day life the Japanese are living it.
Reiki is a word not really translatable – more an emotion or feeling from within –loosely is means ‘spiritual life force’. Reiki as a practice means different things to different people. It is best to leave interpretation up to the person receiving the treatment because receiving universal energy can influence an individual on many different levels – physical, emotional and spiritual.
When receiving Reiki, the energy will be guided to the places your body and soul need it the most. Energy gradually moves to gently unblock where it has stalled.

While traditional Japanese Reiki was developed by Mikao Usui, there have been Western adaptations to Reiki Healing. As with clients receiving treatment, practicing Reiki can mean different things to those delivering the treatment. Alternate methods have been developed and you may find some practitioners will lay hands directly while others will not and some practitioners may use additional aids like crystals to help channel energy.
When used in conjunction with other eastern or western treatments, Reiki can positively enhance the recovery process.
